Tenerife’s Calima
A Tenerife photographer’s treasure
What is Calima?
Might be your first question when you arrive on Tenerife – if you haven’t discovered it yet, you soon will. I immediately fell in love with Calima – although it can be both a blessing and a curse. It is described online as “Calima is a hot, oppressing dust and sand-laden, wind in the Canary Islands region. ” This oppressing sand-laden wind comes in from the Sahara and causes a yellow, dusty haze to engulf the island and even be seen from space. For a photographer chasing sunset – your dreams are normally dashed. The sun disappears and the sunrise along with it behind the haze – but occasionally something amazing happens.
Calima, despite its beauty*, does bring with it increased air pollution and risks to lung health. It has also been shown to spread plant-feeding nutrients, phosphorus, as far as the Amazon which helps to replenish nutrient-depleted soils.
I work as a professional photographer around Tenerife – combining people and the natural landscapes of Tenerife to create stunning imagery. I love the chance to capture moments with friends as well, but I it can take me a while to get around to personal photos.
These are few from one particularly magical sunset in the south of Tenerife – on hippy beach with Yves, Ilaria and Roberta.
* which I’m told is in the eye of the beholder 🙂
